Bike Course Volunteers - Win!

The bike course at the Kelowna Apple Triathlon is both challenging and beautiful. But for such an amazing course, we need almost 250 volunteers who are vital to the success of the Apple Triathlon. If you are planning on volunteering, consider being a bike course marshal.

In addition to all the great prizes awarded at the Volunteer Party, there’s another incentive to volunteer on the bike course: All bike course volunteers (over the age of 19) will be entered into a draw for a prize provided by Tree Brewing: Beer for a Year!

As a volunteer on the bike course, you see first hand the speed the cyclists are going at as well as the cornering. It’s exciting! The course on Saturday is compact but the same for all racers: Kids of Steel, Try-a-Tri athletes and Junior Elites. The only difference is the number of lap each athlete will complete.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday from 6:30 am to about 11:30 am. Check out the
Saturday bike course map:

On Sunday, the bike course accommodates more races: age group Sprint and Olympic distance in the morning, and Elites in the afternoon.

Cyclists travel from downtown Kelowna, part way up Knox Mountain, through Glenmore and back to the Dolphins downtown.

Volunteers are needed for shifts between 6:00 am and 3:30 pm. Here is a link to the Sunday bike course maps:

The Apple Triathlon bike course is a closed course (no traffic is allowed) so having a good group of bike course marshals is vital to helping local traffic navigate the traffic pattern though downtown and Glenmore.

If you have a few hours to spare on the weekend of Aug 18-19, please join us as a volunteer at the 2012 Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon!

World Class Volunteers - World Class Race!

With little more than two weeks to go before the 29th annual Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon on August 19 to 21, all indicators are that the host event of the Canadian National Championships and ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup will again have a record-breaking year.

With more than 1 000 of approximately 1 200 participant spots already filled for the Sunday events, it is clear that local, national and international athletes rate the “Apple” as a world-class triathlon event.

In an exciting build-up to the events in Kelowna, the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series takes place on August 6 and 7 in Hyde Park, London, England. Canada’s top triathletes, including two-time Olympic medallist Simon Whitfield (Victoria), world number-two ranked Paula Findlay (Edmonton) and three-time ITU Continental Cup winner Kyle Jones (Oakville, Ontario), will have the last opportunity to test themselves on the proposed 2012 Olympic Triathlon Course. The world’s elite women’s race takes place on August 6, with the men battling it out on August 7.

For the Apple, nearly six hundred of more than 1200 volunteer positions still need to be filled. “We are fortunate and grateful that many of our loyal supporters are filling more than one position,” says Dave McCoubrey, volunteer director.

Event organizers, the Kelowna Apple Triathlon Society (KATS), have made volunteer registration more effective with a new online volunteer registration system developed by Kelowna web developer, Peter Rudd. “This makes it a lot easier for our volunteers to choose their preferred positions, locations and times,” says McCoubrey. To register as a volunteer for a position on any of the days or to host an Elite athlete as part of the Homestay program please visit: http://www.appletriathlon.com/participate-volunteers.php or call the KATS office at (250) 763-5287.

If you would like to get one of the last spots for any of the events during the Kelowna Apple Triathlon weekend, visit http://www.appletriathlon.com/ for more information. Event entries close on August 14. The Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon offers races for all ages and stages, starting on Friday with the open water swim, aquathon and a fun run, and continuing on Saturday with Kids of Steel , the Try-a-Tri and Junior Elites. Sunday sees the business challenge relay, competitive age-groupers and paratriathletes, and of course, the highlight event featuring Male and Female Elites.
