With little more than two weeks to go before the 29th annual Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon on August 19 to 21, all indicators are that the host event of the Canadian National Championships and ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup will again have a record-breaking year.
With more than 1 000 of approximately 1 200 participant spots already filled for the Sunday events, it is clear that local, national and international athletes rate the “Apple” as a world-class triathlon event.
In an exciting build-up to the events in Kelowna, the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series takes place on August 6 and 7 in Hyde Park, London, England. Canada’s top triathletes, including two-time Olympic medallist Simon Whitfield (Victoria), world number-two ranked Paula Findlay (Edmonton) and three-time ITU Continental Cup winner Kyle Jones (Oakville, Ontario), will have the last opportunity to test themselves on the proposed 2012 Olympic Triathlon Course. The world’s elite women’s race takes place on August 6, with the men battling it out on August 7.
For the Apple, nearly six hundred of more than 1200 volunteer positions still need to be filled. “We are fortunate and grateful that many of our loyal supporters are filling more than one position,” says Dave McCoubrey, volunteer director.
Event organizers, the Kelowna Apple Triathlon Society (KATS), have made volunteer registration more effective with a new online volunteer registration system developed by Kelowna web developer, Peter Rudd. “This makes it a lot easier for our volunteers to choose their preferred positions, locations and times,” says McCoubrey. To register as a volunteer for a position on any of the days or to host an Elite athlete as part of the Homestay program please visit: http://www.appletriathlon.com/participate-volunteers.php or call the KATS office at (250) 763-5287.
