Top males contenders for the 2009 Canadian National Triathlon Championships

Kelowna – Never before has Kelowna seen such a star-packed start for the Canadian National Triathlon Championships: Beijing Olympic silver medal winner Simon Whitfield, 2004 Olympian Brent McMahon as well as Paul Tichelaar, who had four top 10 World Cup finishes in 2008, are all on the men’s starting list competing for the 2009 National Elite title at the Kelowna Apple Triathlon.

The men will be joined by Paula Findlay, winner of the 2009 National Junior and Elite titles, and Canadian National team members Lauren Groves and Kathy Tremblay. Whitfield, McMahon, Tichelaar, Groves and Tremblay are all part of a seven-member Triathlon Canada national team for the 2009 season. 20-year old Findlay is part of a five-member development squad. Team Tech, as the athletes are known, are sponsored by Canadian mining company Tech Cominco.

The Kelowna Apple Triathlon hosted the Canadian National Triathlon Championship for the first time in 1992. It was Simon Whitfield’s first national event.

The 2009 Canadian National Championships take place during the weekend of August 21-23 as part of the 27th Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon in the magnificent surroundings of Kelowna. The Apple Triathlon was awarded National Championships for Elite and Age Group participants for 2004/2005 and again for 2008-2010. It has been recognized as an International Triathlon Union (ITU) event since 2005.

Strongly supported by Triathlon Canada and Tri B.C., the entrants’ list will show up to 1500 participants, and the event will be driven by the help of up to 700 community volunteers. For more details on the weekend of events please visit our website at http://www.appletriathlon.com
